Description: The GREATER DETROIT was built in 1923 by American Ship Building Co. at Lorain, OH U.S. The Greater Detroit is a steel hulled steamer with a length of 518 feet, and a width of 58 feet. It displaces 7739 tons, and has a load capacity of 3330 tons. It entered service in the year 1923 under the ownership of Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Co. of Detroit, MI U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Sold in 1956 to Abraham Siegel and Robert Rosen, of Detroit, MI. Burned as a spectacle on Lake St. Clair, on the night of December 12, 1956, and upper works scrapped by them. Hull towed to Hamilton, Ont., arriving there on May 1, 1957, for scrapping by Steel Co. of Canada, Ltd. The photograph shows the Greater Detroit under way on the Great Lakes.
