Description: The J. BARBER was built in 1856 by Luther Moses at Cleveland, OH U.S. The J. Barber is a wood hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 125 feet, and a width of 26 feet. It displaces 263 tons. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Caught fire and burned to waterline, then sank, about ten miles off Michigan City, IN, July 19, 1871, running from St. Joseph, MI, to Chicago, IL, in fruit trade. Two lives lost. The photograph shows the J. Barber under way on the Great Lakes. More information about this vessel is available at the HCGL Website
