Description: The FRANK W. GIFFORD was built in 1868 by Quayle & Martin at Cleveland, OH U.S. The Frank W. Gifford is a wood hulled schooner with a length of 159 feet, and a width of 31 feet. It displaces 451 tons, and has a load capacity of 429 tons. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Sprung a leak in heavy weather in mid-lake, off Point Betsey, Lake Michigan, October 21, 1897, and sank; crew rescued from life boat by schooner CITY OF SHEBOYGAN. Vessel bound from Escanaba, MI, for Fairport, OH, with cargo of iron ore. The photograph shows the Frank W. Gifford under way on the Great Lakes.
