The IRA H. OWEN was built in 1887 by Globe Iron Works at Cleveland, OH U.S. The Ira H. Owen is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 262 feet, and a width of 39 feet. It displaces 1753 tons, and has a load capacity of 1497 tons. It entered service in the year 1887 under the ownership of The Owen Line of Chicago, IL U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Foundered November 28, 1905, about forty miles off Outer Island, Lake Superior, with all hands; 17 lives lost. Vessel bound from Duluth for Buffalo with grain at time of loss. Final enrollment surrendered at Milwaukee, WI, December 23, 1905. The photograph shows the Ira H. Owen under way on the Great Lakes.
