The JOSEPH C. GILCHRIST was built in 1903 by American Ship Building Co. at Lorain, OH U.S. The Joseph C. Gilchrist is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 416 feet, and a width of 50 feet. It displaces 4725 tons, and has a load capacity of 3393 tons. It entered service in the year 1903 under the ownership of Gilchrist Transportation Co. of Cleveland, OH U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: After lying at Erie, PA, 1945-1946, passed down, Port Colborne, June 22, 1946, in tow of tugs A.M. MCAULEY and DALHOUSIE ROVER, bound for Hamilton, Ontario. Scrapped there in 1949 by Steel Co. of Canada, Ltd. The photograph shows the Joseph C. Gilchrist under way on the Great Lakes.
