The JOHN W. GATES was built in 1900 by American Ship Building Co. at Lorain, OH U.S. The John W. Gates is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 478 feet, and a width of 52 feet. It displaces 5946 tons, and has a load capacity of 4440 tons. It entered service in the year 1900 under the ownership of American Steamship Co. (Augustus B. Wolvin, Mgr.) of Duluth, MN U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Towed from Lorain, OH, to Conneaut, OH, in spring, 1961, and scrapped there during winter, 1961-1962.
