Description: The BRITON was built in 1891 by Globe Iron Works at Cleveland, OH U.S. The Briton is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 296 feet, and a width of 40 feet. It displaces 2348 tons, and has a load capacity of 1875 tons. It entered service in the year 1891 under the ownership of Menominee Transit Co. (M.A. Hanna Co., Mgrs.) of Cleveland, OH U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Stranded on Point Abino, Ontario, Lake Erie, on November 13, 1929; no lives lost. Later broken up. The photograph shows the Briton under way on the Great Lakes. More information about this vessel is available at the HCGL Website
