The CHARLEMAGNE TOWER JR. was built in 1886 by Thomas Quayle's Sons at Cleveland, OH U.S. The Charlemagne Tower Jr. is a wood hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 255 feet, and a width of 40 feet. It displaces 1825 tons, and has a load capacity of 1543 tons. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Foundered after seams opened during gale and blizzard, March 6, 1914, off Seaside, NJ; no lives lost. Crew of 18 rescued by whaleback propeller BAYPORT; vessel bound from Norfolk, VA, for Boston, MA with cargo of coal. Had put into Hampton Roads, VA, with engine problems, then continued on voyage.
