Description: The SAXONA was built in 1903 by American Ship Building Co. at Cleveland, OH U.S. The Saxona is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 416 feet, and a width of 50 feet. It displaces 4716 tons, and has a load capacity of 3441 tons. It entered service in the year 1903 under the ownership of Zenith Steamship Co. (G.A. Tomlinson, Mgr.) of Duluth, MN U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Sold to Steel Factors, Ltd., Montreal, P.Q., for scrapping overseas, in fall, 1967. While under tandem tow, with SAUREL, by tug KORAL, foundered in position 39.42N x 30.36W, on January 13, 1968, bound for Vado, Italy. The photograph shows the Saxona under way on the Great Lakes.
