The STEPHEN M. CLEMENT was built in 1905 by American Ship Building Co. at Lorain, OH U.S. The Stephen M. Clement is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 480 feet, and a width of 52 feet. It displaces 5821 tons, and has a load capacity of 4487 tons. It entered service in the year 1905 under the ownership of Buffalo Steamship Co. (Mitchell & Co., Mgrs.) of Cleveland, OH U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Declared constructive total loss after grounding at Ashland, WI, on May 31, 1966. Towed to Fraser Shipyard, Superior, WI, and laid up. Used as "trade-in tonnage" to U.S. Maritime Commission, for C-4 GENERAL H.G. FREEMAN. Sold to Hyman-Michaels Co. for $35,111 and scrapped at Fraser yard in 1969. The photograph shows the Stephen M. Clement under way on the Great Lakes.
