Description: The REPUBLIC was built in 1881 by Presley & Co. at Cleveland, OH U.S. The Republic is a wood hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 235 feet, and a width of 35 feet. It displaces 1343 tons, and has a load capacity of 1117 tons. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Sprung a leak about twenty-five miles east of Michigan Island, Lake Superior, with cargo of iron ore, on October 15, 1903. Turned about and when about five miles off the island, vessel sank. Crew made shore safely in small boats. The photograph shows the Republic under way on the Great Lakes.
