Description: The PONTIAC was built in 1889 by Cleveland Ship Building Co. at Cleveland, OH U.S. The Pontiac is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 300 feet, and a width of 41 feet. It displaces 2298 tons, and has a load capacity of 1788 tons. It entered service in the year 1889 under the ownership of Cleveland Iron Mining Co. of Cleveland, OH U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Stranded on November 23, 1917, on Lyal Island, Lake Huron, while trying to make shelter of Stokes Bay; no lives lost. Remains were scrapped in 1942. The photograph shows the Pontiac under way on the Great Lakes. More information about this vessel is available at the HCGL Website
