Description: The HURLBUT W. SMITH was built in 1903 by American Ship Building Co. at Lorain, OH U.S. The Hurlbut W. Smith is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 414 feet, and a width of 50 feet. It displaces 4662 tons, and has a load capacity of 3415 tons. It entered service in the year 1903 under the ownership of U.S. Transportation Co. of Cleveland, OH U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Ran aground at Little Current, Ont., in October, 1958; declared a constructive total loss. Sold to Knudsen Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Superior, WI, in October, 1958, and scrapped there during the winter, 1958-1959. The photograph shows the Hurlbut W. Smith at Midland, Ont.
