Description: The NORTH WEST was built in 1894 by Globe Ship Building Co. at Cleveland, OH U.S. The North West is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 358 feet, and a width of 44 feet. It displaces 4244 tons, and has a load capacity of 2339 tons. It entered service in the year 1894 under the ownership of Northern Steamship Co. of Buffalo, NY U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Torpedoed by German submarine about 300 miles west of Hebrides Islands, North Atlantic Ocean, on February 6, 1941. Vessel bound from Montreal, P.Q., for Preston, Great Britain; entire crew of thirty-seven were lost. The photograph shows the North West under way on the Great Lakes.
