Description: The VENUS was built in 1901 by American Ship Building Co. at Lorain, OH U.S. The Venus is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 346 feet, and a width of 48 feet. It displaces 3719 tons, and has a load capacity of 2766 tons. It entered service in the year 1901 under the ownership of Gilchrist Transportation Co. of Cleveland, OH U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Sold to Marine Salvage, Ltd., Port Colborne, for scrap in 1961. Passed down, Detroit, on October 26, 1961, but broke tow line, stranded, and partly sank at Point Abino, Ont., Lake Erie. Scrapped there by Harry Gamble, of Port Dover, Ont., over a period of years beginning in the winter, 1961-1962. The photograph shows the Venus at St. Clair River.
