The JOHN A. MCGEAN was built in 1908 by American Ship Building Co. at Lorain, OH U.S. The John A. Mcgean is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 432 feet, and a width of 52 feet. It displaces 5100 tons, and has a load capacity of 3777 tons. It entered service in the year 1908 under the ownership of Pioneer Steamship Co. (Hutchinson & Co., Mgrs.) of Cleveland, OH U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Foundered in "Big Storm", November 9, 1913, somewhere northwest of Tawas Point, Lake Huron, with all hands; twenty-three lives lost. Cargo of coal insured for $17,900; vessel, uninsured, valued at $240,000. The photograph shows the John A. Mcgean at Port Hope, MI.
