Description: The SUPERIOR CITY was built in 1898 by Cleveland Ship Building Co. at Lorain, OH U.S. The Superior City is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 429 feet, and a width of 50 feet. It displaces 4795 tons, and has a load capacity of 3693 tons. It entered service in the year 1898 under the ownership of American Steamship Co. (A.B. Wolvin, Mgr.) of Duluth, MN U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Sunk in collision with steamer WILLIS L. KING, August 20, 1920, on Whitefish Bay, Lake Superior. Boilers exploded as vessel sank; 29 lives lost. The photograph shows the Superior City under way on the Great Lakes. More information about this vessel is available at the HCGL Website
