The SUMATRA was built in 1874 by Quelos & Peck at Black River, OH U.S. The Sumatra is a wood hulled schooner with a length of 204 feet, and a width of 34 feet. It displaces 845 tons, and has a load capacity of 803 tons. It entered service in the year 1874 under the ownership of Cleveland Transportation Co. (M.A. Hanna Co., Mgrs.) of Cleveland, OH U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Foundered 3/4 mile south of Milwaukee (WI) piers, September 30, 1896, while in tow of steamer B.W. ARNOLD. Four lives lost. Was bound from South Chicago for Fort William, Ont., with steel rails. The photograph shows the Sumatra under way on the Great Lakes.
