Description: The JAMES GAYLEY was built in 1902 by American Ship Building Co. at Cleveland, OH U.S. The James Gayley is a steel hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 416 feet, and a width of 50 feet. It displaces 4777 tons, and has a load capacity of 3359 tons. It entered service in the year 1902 under the ownership of Cleveland Steamship Co. (John Mitchell, Mgr.) of Cleveland, OH U.S. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Sunk in collision with propeller RENSSELAER, August 7, 1912, in fog, forty-three miles east of Manitou Island, Lake Superior; no lives lost. Vessel was bound from Buffalo, NY, for Duluth, MN, with cargo of coal at time of loss. The photograph shows the James Gayley under way on the Great Lakes.
