Description: The DAVID DOWS was built in 1881 by Bailey Brothers at Toledo, OH U.S. The David Dows is a wood hulled schooner with 5 masts, a length of 265 feet, and a width of 37 feet. It displaces 1418 tons, and has a load capacity of 1347 tons. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: Foundered in forty-two feet of water ten miles south-southeast of Chicago, six miles east of Calumet Harbor light, Lake Michigan, on November 29, 1889. Had been in tow of propeller AURORA at time of loss. Final enrollment surrendered at Cleveland, OH, June 20, 1890. The photograph shows the David Dows under way on the Great Lakes.
