The HORACE A. TUTTLE was built in 1887 by Cleveland Dry Dock Co. at Cleveland, OH U.S. The Horace A. Tuttle is a wood hulled propeller driven vessel with a length of 250 feet, and a width of 38 feet. It displaces 1585 tons, and has a load capacity of 1354 tons. The vessel was removed from service with the following notation: After losing rudder in making shelter at Michigan City, IN, October 26, 1898, vessel struck west breakwall, and stranded at mouth of harbor, becoming a total loss after breaking in two. Vessel was bound from Chicago for Buffalo with 176,000 bushels grain; no lives lost. The photograph shows the Horace A. Tuttle under way on the Great Lakes.
